Hana
is located on the eastern side of the island of Maui, along Highway 360 between Kaeleku and Hamoa. Today Hana is a quiet town of approximately 700, but it was once home to several thousand when the first sugar plantation opened here in 1855. Just ten miles south of Hana on Highway 31 is the rainforest region of the Kipahula District. This incredibly scenic area receives 300 inches of rainfall per year, and visitors can hike the Kuloa Trail past cascading waterfalls and streams. Two popular points of interest in the rainforest are Oheo Gulch and Seven Pools. The Gulch carries water from Mt. Haleakala down to the ocean, and along the way form pools where people can swim in the cool mountain water. However, Seven Pools is a misnomer, as there are actually more than two dozen of these pools in the area. Hana offers a variety of other activities, including taking a lava tube tour at Ka'eleku Caverns, jeep excursions, horseback riding, and swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and diving at Hana Bay. Nearby Hamoa Beach is also a very good spot for snorkeling and diving. This protected cove is calm and contains coral gardens, sea turtles and colorful fish, and has guides who tailor your dive to your skill level. Other interesting places to visit in Hana include The Hana Coast Gallery and the Hana Cultural Center and Museum, for a chance to view native art and crafts.

Hana Weather & Climate

The island of Maui enjoys mild year round temperatures, moderate humidity, prevailing northeasterly tradewinds and infrequent severe storms. Overall, summer temperatures are slightly warmer, peaking in August, with February and March being the coolest months (if you can call mid-70s "cool.") Visitors will encounter more variations between elevations and coast exposure on the islands than seasons. The east coast of Maui is wetter than the west coast due to the prevailing northeast tradewinds, which bring rain to the eastern shores. Rain and windstorms are more frequent in the winter months, but they generally clear up within 24 hours. Severe storms are uncommon (such as hurricanes or tropical storms) but they do occasionally make landfall, on average, every 8 to 10 years.
