Paia
, once an old sugar town, is on the northern side of Maui, near Kailua Gulch. While many of these old towns faded away, Paia adapted to the times, and today you will find boutiques, trendy restaurants and wind surfing shops next door to Mom and Pop groceries. Paia is home to many art galleries featuring the works of renowned international artists. However, the town's main attraction is Hookipa Beach. Here windsurfers from around the world flock in search of the ultimate wave. Hookipa Beach Park is where the wind roars through the isthmus of Maui, bringing with it the conditions for record breaking maneuvers. Paia is also home to two world-class windsurfing competitions, and has become known as "The Windsurfing Capital of the World." Just a few minutes away from Paia are the quaint towns of Haiku and Huelo, and from there you can travel the 52-mile "Road to Hana" Highway which winds around 600 curves and crosses more than 50 one-lane bridges, past waterfalls, dramatic cliffs and tropical jungle. What a spectacular drive through a part of the island that evokes an earlier time. In the other direction, Paia is just a short drive to the Hui No Eau Visual Arts Center in the town of Makawao. This is Hawaii's premier arts collection and definitely worth a visit. Paia, located on the quieter side of Maui, is perfect for those seeking something off the beaten path, yet you are still only approximately an hour's drive from the city of Lahaina.

The sunny north/northwestern region of Maui has moderate rainfall during the year, with most of it occurring between October and March. Occasionally an entire month during the dry season will go by with no measurable precipitation. The normal trade winds, accentuated by the funneling effect between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains, as well as by the daytime low pressure in the valley, often attain a speed of 40 to 45 mph at the airport, but serve to make living conditions in the nearby Kahului-Wailuku community pleasant and comfortable. Humidity at Kahului is usually moderate to high, with wet season humidity averaging slightly higher than in the dry season. However, due to the system of natural ventilation provided by the prevailing winds, the weather is seldom oppressive even during the warmer months of the year.
