Mauna-Kea
is the world's tallest mountain, one of two extinct volcanoes located on The Big Island of Hawaii. The summit of the mountain is one of the clearest and driest spots on Earth and is superb for viewing the planets and stars, and its' unique geography and location makes it the world's premier location for observatories. At the base of the mountain, along the sunny Kohala Coast lies the Mauna Kea resort area, which contains two of the world's most picturesque beaches. Silky white sands and turquoise waters, along with several fine restaurants, oceanside tennis, spa facilities and 36 holes of championship golf help make Mauna Kea one of the finest resort areas in Hawaii. Condi Nast Traveler has called Mauna Kea and the Hapuna, "two of the best golf courses in the world." With rolling fairways set against dramatic shoreline and superb facilities, the Mauna Kea Golf Course remains the standard by which all other island courses are judged. Other recreational activities along Kohala's "Sun Coast" include fishing, swimming, windsurfing, horseback riding, hiking and whale watching. The Mauna Kea beaches are also just minutes to the historic villages of The Big Island's "Upcountry."

The sunny north/northwestern region of Maui has moderate rainfall during the year, with most of it occurring between October and March. Occasionally an entire month during the dry season will go by with no measurable precipitation. The normal trade winds, accentuated by the funneling effect between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains, as well as by the daytime low pressure in the valley, often attain a speed of 40 to 45 mph at the airport, but serve to make living conditions in the nearby Kahului-Wailuku community pleasant and comfortable. Humidity at Kahului is usually moderate to high, with wet season humidity averaging slightly higher than in the dry season. However, due to the system of natural ventilation provided by the prevailing winds, the weather is seldom oppressive even during the warmer months of the year.
