Makawao
is a small town located in the north-central part of Maui's "Upcountry." This part of the island, along the slopes of Haleakala Mountain, is comprised of fertile farmlands with comfortable daytime temperatures and cool nights, and sweeping ocean views of the North Coast. Makawao is an eclectic collection of boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and reasonably priced bed and breakfasts. It has become an artists haven in recent years, and you will find everything from fine art paintings and prints, hand blown glass, to sculptures and koa furnishings crafted by local artisans and craftsmen from around the world. The Hui No'Eau Visual Arts Center is definitely worth a visit. The Haleakala National Park at Makawao offers hiking and camping, and swimming in the lower pools of the Seven Sacred Pools area of Oheo Gulch. You will also find nearby horseback riding, golf, and all the beach activities on Maui's popular West Coast is just a 30-40 minute drive away. Makawao makes a peaceful retreat and is a nice contrast to the busier beach communities found below the mountain.

The sunny north/northwestern region of Maui has moderate rainfall during the year, with most of it occurring between October and March. Occasionally an entire month during the dry season will go by with no measurable precipitation. The normal trade winds, accentuated by the funneling effect between Haleakala and the West Maui mountains, as well as by the daytime low pressure in the valley, often attain a speed of 40 to 45 mph at the airport, but serve to make living conditions in the nearby Kahului-Wailuku community pleasant and comfortable. Humidity at Kahului is usually moderate to high, with wet season humidity averaging slightly higher than in the dry season. However, due to the system of natural ventilation provided by the prevailing winds, the weather is seldom oppressive even during the warmer months of the year.
