Wailea
is located on Maui's southwestern, palm-fringed "gold" coast and has been described as the "Beverly Hills by the Sea." This planned resort development sits on 1500 acres of black-lava shore with five beautiful beaches, a shopping village, three world-class golf courses, a tennis complex and several upscale resort hotels. Wailea has every kind of outdoors recreation, including swimming, snorkeling, skiing, deep-sea fishing, surfing, hiking, horseback riding and more. Just off shore from Wailea lies "Turtle Town," a popular dive site so named because of the green sea turtles that inhibit the area. A 3-mile round trip coastal path makes a great hike with spectacular views in all directions, and the trails' south end borders an exquisite native plant garden. For shopping, the Wailea Shopping Village has everything from art galleries, jewelry, film and photography supplies, clothing shops and restaurants. There is also a free Polynesian show every Tuesday afternoon at the village. If you are looking for a spectacular "Hawaiian fantasy" vacation, nothing compares to Wailea on Maui's south coast.

The island of Maui has both rain forest and desert conditions. The southwest side receives only 12 inches of rain, mostly during the winter months, and the east side receives approximately 90 inches per year. Mountain regions may get over 300 inches. The constant breezes keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of trade winds and usually indicate that a rainstorm will soon arrive. Maui is known for its many rainbows, which usually occur in early morning or late afternoon, depending on wind direction and wind speed. Severe weather such as tsunamis and hurricanes are possible but rare on the Hawaiian Islands. The southwestern side is considered the sunniest, driest region of Maui.
