Ulupalakua is considered to be part of Maui's Upcountry, although it is located at the southern edge of Haleakala National Park on the west side of the island. One of the most scenic drives on Maui is to start from Paia and head down the east coast to Hana - from there the road heads south and twists and winds for 51 miles through lush countryside to Oh'eo Gulch and up and around to Ulupalakua Ranch. The 20,000-acre ranch was once owned by legendary sea captain James Makee, and is now the site of Maui's only winery. The rustic grounds of the winery are great for an afternoon picnic. Ulupalakua hosts an annual festival each year at the winery that features an agricultural trade show, where visitors can sample all kinds of different foods. The festival also includes cooking demonstrations and flower arranging competitions. Also while in Ulupalakua, visit the General Store and Deli and sample the delicious homemade chili. Maui's Upcountry is a delightful change from the coastal beaches and resorts, tranquil, affordable and away from the busy crowds.

Ulupalakua Weather & Climate

The island of Maui has both rain forest and desert conditions. The southwest side receives only 12 inches of rain, mostly during the winter months, and the east side receives approximately 90 inches per year. Mountain regions may get over 300 inches. The constant breezes keep Maui's temperature very comfortable. Trade winds are nearly always calm in the morning hours. Kona winds come from the opposite direction of trade winds and usually indicate that a rainstorm will soon arrive. Maui is known for its many rainbows, which usually occur in early morning or late afternoon, depending on wind direction and wind speed. Severe weather such as tsunamis and hurricanes are possible but rare on the Hawaiian Islands. The southwestern side is considered the sunniest, driest region of Maui.
