Puako
is a small community in the North Kona district of The Big Island. Situated alongside Puako Bay and adjacent to Wailea Bay, this is still a relatively undiscovered part of the "leeward," or western side of the island. Puako has the distinction of being the sunniest spot on the Kona Coast, with the least rainfall per year (an average of 5.7 inches.) This tiny little town that runs alongside the seashore is also known for being the home of the largest gathering of petroglyphs in Hawaii. Located off Highway 19, approximately 3,000 of these drawings are found on a series of smooth volcano dome shaped rocks. Scientists believe these drawings held spiritual significance for ancient Hawaiians, and it's a must see for those visiting Puako. The crystal clear waters of Puako Bay offer some of the best snorkeling in the state, and the well-known Hapuna Beach is just five minutes away. Puako is also just a short drive to all the world class resorts, fine restaurants, shopping and championship golf courses of the South Kohala/North Kona Coast area. But, Puako offers more privacy than some of the other larger cities of the west coast of The Big Island, so, you may never want to leave! In Puako, you can walk the shore and enjoy a gorgeous island sunset, snorkel with friendly sea turtles and explore fascinating tidepools, explore the historic petroglyphs, or relax and do nothing but enjoy the sunny days and balmy nights!

Puako Weather & Climate
The north/northwestern tip of The Big Island is lush and green year round. Due to its central location on the island, it is also somewhat in the middle where precipitation is concerned - not quite as dry as the western "leeward" side, but not as wet as the eastern "windward" side. Showers occur year round in this area, but most often at night or in the late afternoon. The temperature is warm throughout the year, only slightly warmer in the summer months, and cooler during the overnight hours. Other important features of the climate on The Big Island include moderate humidity and persistent northeasterly trade winds. In winter, the trade winds may be interrupted for days or weeks by the invasion of cyclones and this brings more rainstorms and southerly and westerly winds to the island.
