Mauna-Lani
is located on the Kohala Coast (west side) of The Big Island, about thirty minutes from Kona. It is the site of a luxurious resort that has long been known as a front runner in historic preservation of the surrounding land, and a pioneer in conservation, pollution prevention and utilization of renewable resources. Walking trails through fifteen acres of fishpond preserve and 27 acres of historic park are open to the public at Mauna Lani. Self-guided tours are available of ancient shelter caves, while a prehistoric fishing village and a museum takes you back in time to another world. Of course, there is much more than history awaiting you at Mauni Lani. Gorgeous tropical beach and shoreline stretch out before you, offering every type of water sport imaginable - swimming, snorkeling, surfing, diving, sailing, deep-sea fishing and whale watching. Other activities include world-class golf, horseback riding, tennis, hiking, helicopter tours, shopping and dining at one of the five fabulous restaurants at Mauni Lani Bay. The Kohala Coast Airport is only twenty minutes from Mauni Lani and other nearby attractions include Volcano's National Park, Dolphin Quest, Lapakahi State Historical Park and the Mookini Haiau, which is an ancient Hawaiian temple.

The north/northwestern tip of The Big Island is lush and green year round. Due to its central location on the island, it is also somewhat in the middle where precipitation is concerned - not quite as dry as the western "leeward" side, but not as wet as the eastern "windward" side. Showers occur year round in this area, but most often at night or in the late afternoon. The temperature is warm throughout the year, only slightly warmer in the summer months, and cooler during the overnight hours. Other important features of the climate on The Big Island include moderate humidity and persistent northeasterly trade winds. In winter, the trade winds may be interrupted for days or weeks by the invasion of cyclones and this brings more rainstorms and southerly and westerly winds to the island.
