Kamuela
is located along Highway 19 on the north side of The Big Island in the South Kohala region. Kamuela is also referred to as Waimea, which was the original name of the community and the surrounding area. Due to some overlapping names, and confusion with similar names of towns on the other islands, the post office demanded another definitive name for the town, and thus Kamuela was adopted. Kamuela lies in the rolling green foothills above the Kohala Coast, and offers hiking, biking, tennis, and horseback riding. Kamuela is also home to nine golf courses and seven world class hotels. Just a short drive takes you to some of the island's most beautiful beaches and swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, diving and more. The town of Kamuela boosts some of the best restaurants on the island, where chefs prepare dishes made from fresh fruits and produce and seafood of the area. In recent years, Kamuela has become popular with many fine artists and craftspeople, and art galleries and specialty shops line the main street of town. Other points of interest in Kamuela include Parker Ranch, the largest working ranch of its kind in the U.S., where Hawaiian cowboys still work and live in the way of their ancestors. Kamuela is also the home base for the famous Mauna Kea Observatory. The beautiful country setting of the town, just nine miles above the Kohala Coast, makes Kamuela a perfect choice for a peaceful vacation retreat.

Kamuela Weather & Climate
The north/northwestern tip of The Big Island is lush and green year round. Due to its central location on the island, it is also somewhat in the middle where precipitation is concerned - not quite as dry as the western "leeward" side, but not as wet as the eastern "windward" side. Showers occur year round in this area, but most often at night or in the late afternoon. The temperature is warm throughout the year, only slightly warmer in the summer months, and cooler during the overnight hours. Other important features of the climate on The Big Island include moderate humidity and persistent northeasterly trade winds. In winter, the trade winds may be interrupted for days or weeks by the invasion of cyclones and this brings more rainstorms and southerly and westerly winds to the island.
