Kalopa
is located in the District of Hamakua along the northeastern "windward" side of The Big Island, just north of the Hilo District. Kalopa State Park is a nature lover's paradise. It's set at the 2,000 foot elevation level among lush flora and fauna, and has well-marked hiking trails and also picnic and barbecue areas. The Hilo-Hamakua Heritage Coastline begins near Kalopa and runs for 45 miles south on State Highway 19 through historic mill towns and plantation villages, and along scenic ocean byways. This region was once home to many large-scale sugar plantations until just a few years ago, but today is an exciting tourist destination. Just north of Kalopa is the town of Honokaa, a designated "Main Street USA Town," that serves as the gateway to Waipio Valley, which is called "A Tropical Grand Canyon." Honokaa also offers lots of art galleries, unique shops and restaurants. Recreational activities near Kalopa include swimming, surfing, kayaking, hiking, biking, golf and fishing. A few miles south of Kalopa on Highway 19 is Akaka Falls State Park, which is considered to be one of the most spectacular places to view the tropical beauty of the island. There are two large falls inside the park and to reach them, one must hike through tropical rainforest, passing several smaller cascades along the way. At the end of the trail, you are rewarded with the stunning 442-foot Akaka Falls. Other attractions nearby include botanical gardens, historic plantations and bamboo forests.

Kalopa Weather & Climate

Dry, sunny conditions generally prevail in the Kona region of The Big Island of Hawaii. There are two seasons - winter and summer, but there is little variation between the two except at elevations where winter temperatures, at night, can get cold. This is the most influencing factor in Hawaii's weather, and the higher the mountains, the greater the extremes. For instance, the dry leeward coast of The Big Island is protected from the moist clouds of the east by the 13,600-foot summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. However, even the West Coast of the Big Island can experience differences in cloud cover and precipitation. While the coast is mostly sunny and dry, less than five miles inland on the slopes of Mt. Hualalai in South Kona, afternoon mists and light rains often follow sunny mornings, and this helps to enrich the coffee farms of the area.
