Kehena is located in the Puna District on the eastern side of the island, home to a "clothing optional" black sand beach that is protected by steep cliffs and tall trees. Kehena Beach is sometimes also called Dolphin Beach. It's a popular spot for locals, although swimming can sometimes be dangerous due to the high waves and rough current. It is a very picturesque spot, however, and is just forty minutes from the historic plantation town of Hilo, where one can enjoy fine dining, museums and visit art galleries. The Puna District is sometimes called "the land that flames and blooms" - an exotic land that was formed after millions of years of lava flowing from the Mauna Loa and Kilauea. It's a land of contrasts, with mango, papaya and banana farms, exquisite orchids and anthuriums that surround the black lava beaches. Attractions in the Kehena Beach area include Lava Tree State Park, the Kumakahi Lighthouse and the buried village of Kapoho. From nearby Kaimu Bay, one can sometimes actually see lave descending the mountains. Kehena is definitely for those who are looking for privacy and seclusion, the real Hawaii away from the hustle of the busy tourist towns.

Kehena Weather & Climate

The southeastern portion of The Big Island has two seasons - winter and summer, but conditions are pretty similar year-round. Winter is slightly cooler and wetter, but Hawaii does not have the extremes of cold winters or summer heat waves. The east side of all of the Hawaiian Islands is wetter due to exposure to the prevailing northeast tradewinds, which bring rain to the eastern shores. Individual islands do have slight variations, however. The official rainy season starts in November, but showers tend to happen late in the evening and don't interfere with outdoor plans. Visitors will find more variation in temperature due to altitude rather than season. Evenings are generally cool and mild year round on The Big Island.
