Kaimu-Bay is a remote area in the Puna region on the eastern side of The Big Island. Located approximately 35 miles south of the city of Kilo, Kaimu Bay is much more "old Hawaii" than many of the tourist areas on the island. The Puna District was formed from millions of years of lava flowing from Mauna Loa and Kilauea and is sometimes called "the land that flames and blooms." You'll find this to be a peaceful area of quiet beauty with its' black sand beaches and lush tropical landscape. Kaimu is also a land of contrasts. Farms that produce mango, papaya, banana, pineapple, orchids and anthuriums surround the black lava and black sand beaches. Things to see in the area include Lava Tree State Park, the buried village of Kapoho and the Kumakahi Lighthouse. From Kaimu Bay, at night, you can sometimes actually see lava descend the mountain. This area has lots of parks, vacation homes and rentals and restaurants. If you're looking for privacy and a taste of the "old" Hawaii, away from the tourist crowds, a stay in Kaimu Bay is an excellent choice.

Kaimu Bay Weather & Climate

The southeastern portion of The Big Island has two seasons - winter and summer, but conditions are pretty similar year-round. Winter is slightly cooler and wetter, but Hawaii does not have the extremes of cold winters or summer heat waves. The east side of all of the Hawaiian Islands is wetter due to exposure to the prevailing northeast tradewinds, which bring rain to the eastern shores. Individual islands do have slight variations, however. The official rainy season starts in November, but showers tend to happen late in the evening and don't interfere with outdoor plans. Visitors will find more variation in temperature due to altitude rather than season. Evenings are generally cool and mild year round on The Big Island.
