Mountain-View
is located near the city of Hilo on The Big Island's east side. This lush, tranquil area has views of Mauna Kea (the world's tallest mountain) and is filled with exotic anthuriums, wild ginger and native Ohia and Rose Apple trees. Activities abound in the area, such as swimming, snorkeling, and exploring tidepools and hot springs, hiking, biking and golf. Lava Tree State Park is about 15 minutes away from Mountain View, and the Volcanoes National Park is an easy 45-minute drive. There are also many small plantation villages and tropical flower gardens and nurseries for sightseeing. Historic Hilo Town is near Mountain View and is the quintessential Hawaiian city. It receives more rain than any other U.S. city, but along with it comes the sweet smelling flowers and rainbows that Hawaii is famous for - a virtual paradise. A farmer's market is held every Wednesday and Saturday in Hilo, and other attractions include its' historic downtown area, art galleries, unique shops and restaurants. Rainfall , rather than temperature, marks the greatest difference in seasons on The Big Island of Hawaii. Along with that, location is the greatest factor that determinates the amount of rain on the island. The area surrounding the town of Keaau, including the city of Hilo, is on the wet "windward" side of the island and receives significant rainfall all year, although more occurs in the winter months. This is mainly caused by orographic or "mountain rains," which form when moist trade winds move from the sea over the steep and high terrain of the island. Another source of rainfall comes from the towering cumulus clouds that build up over the mountains and interiors on sunny, calm afternoons. Although showers may be intense, they are usually brief and localized. The heaviest rains generally come from winter storms between November and April. Differences occur with each storm.
