Kapoho
is a tiny village located on the southeastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii. This is also known as the "sunniest spot" on the eastern side of the island. However, Kapoho is definitely not "tourist Hawaii," but is instead a peaceful, quiet and friendly community where you can see how people live and work on a daily basis in Hawaii. This is rural Hawaii and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and tropical terrain imaginable. There is a geothermally heated tide pool in Kapoho where the average temperature is 90 degrees. And, snorkeling in crystal clear tide pools, swimming and surfing spots are also available at nearby Kehena Beach. There are no white sandy beaches in Kapoho, but what you do get is lots of beach access with amazingly beautiful tide pools with colorful coral and tropical fish. The tide pools are protected by a coral reef way out in the ocean, so the snorkeling areas are usually very serene and calm. The nearest town is Pahoa, which offers great restaurants and shopping, and a Sunday farmer's market. Easy day trips take you to Volcanoes National Park, Waipio Valley and the city of Hilo. If you're looking for a little bit of paradise, away from the crowds, visit beautiful, sunny Kapoho Town.

The southeastern portion of The Big Island has two seasons - winter and summer, but conditions are pretty similar year-round. Winter is slightly cooler and wetter, but Hawaii does not have the extremes of cold winters or summer heat waves. The east side of all of the Hawaiian Islands is wetter due to exposure to the prevailing northeast tradewinds, which bring rain to the eastern shores. Individual islands do have slight variations, however. The official rainy season starts in November, but showers tend to happen late in the evening and don't interfere with outdoor plans. Visitors will find more variation in temperature due to altitude rather than season. Evenings are generally cool and mild year round on The Big Island.
