Volcano is located on the south eastern part of The Big Island along Highway 11, approximately one mile from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. The little village of Volcano sits among Hapu'u tree ferns, Ohia trees, and bright red Lehua blossoms and purple Princess Flower. It does rain in Volcano, and the weather can change quickly, so come prepared, but the rain is what makes this area so incredibly lush and beautiful. Volcano has a variety of restaurants and lodging, including romantic bed and breakfasts, cottages and rental homes. In town you will find shops and art galleries, a history museum and a farmer's market every Sunday. There is even a general store in town that offers everything from drinks and ice cream to household goods. Over half of Volcanoes National Park is designated wilderness, which offers miles and miles of hiking trails. This park is so diverse; it rises from sea level to 13,677 feet at the summit of the Earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa. This is the only place in the U.S. where you can actually hike in and watch the lava flowing from a volcano. The lava conditions change daily and a rangers are on duty 11:00am to 9:00pm. Some other points of interest in the park include Kilauea Crater, the Thomas A. Jagger Museum, Thurston Lava Tube, and the Sulfer Banks. The town of Volcano and Volcanoes National Park is a unique part of Hawaii that is truly an unforgettable experience!
