Waipio-Valley has been described as a "tropical Grand Canyon." This incredible region of valleys and steep cliffs that roll into the sea is located on the northern side of The Big Island, near Highway 240 and the historic town of Honokaa. Waipio is the largest of the seven valleys on the "windward" side of the island, and is considered by many to be the most beautiful place on Earth. The Valley is known as "The Valley of the Kings," because it was at one time the home of the rulers of Hawaii. Waipio Valley can be accessed only by four-wheel drive, horseback, or you can take a horse drawn cart tour of it that way. The ride down is magnificent as you pass many streams and gulches, waterfalls and lush vegetation. Once there, you will be richly rewarded with a long stretch of black sand beach and steep cliffs with waterfalls tumbling into the ocean. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Waipio Valley is the twin falls of Hi'ilawe and Hakalaoa. Swimming, surfing and fishing are possible at the beach, but the surf and currents can be dangerous, so caution is advised. As you sit on the beach, you may be visited by one of the many wild horses that live in the valley. These are horses that escaped their corrals many years ago, and they are quite friendly and harmless. The towns surrounding Waipio Valley are from the sugar plantation era, and the small, friendly community in the Valley is a nice place to relax and stroll around and enjoy the peaceful ambiance and gorgeous views.

Waipio Valley Weather & Climate

The north side of The Big Island, like all of Hawaii, has two seasons, winter and summer. The main differences are the amount of rain and to a lesser degree, the temperatures. Temperatures depend on elevation, and in summer, it is cooler at elevations over 2000-ft. The temperature drops three degrees for every 1000-ft of elevation. It also rains more in the mountains and upcountry areas, especially on the windward (east) side. Consistent trade winds keep summer temperatures tolerable. "Konas" can blow in from the south or west and bring humid, sticky, or sweltering weather and thunderstorms - but these periods of rain and humidity are short. Winter runs from mid-October through April, and during this period, rains are more frequent. Trade winds that usually blow in from the northeast are somewhat erratic and in February, may actually cease for a few weeks.
