Kapaau
is a sleepy little village that sits on the northern tip of The Big Island, near Keokea Beach Park. This beautiful region, locally known as the North Kohala Area, has sweeping mountain vistas and panoramic ocean views, and was the birthplace of King Kamehameha. Each spring there is a festival in Kapaau that starts with a lei draping ceremony at the statue of the King, followed by a parade through town, princesses on horseback and other games and festivities at Kapaau's Kamehameha Park. The town of Kapaau also offers visitors shopping in art galleries and small boutiques, and is just two miles from the town of Hawi, known for its' beautiful village green, fine restaurants and arts community. A farmer's market is also held in Hawi every Saturday "under the Banyan Tree," and features locally grown fresh produce and exotic fruits. From Kapaau, it is only a two-mile drive to the magnificent Pololu Valley with its' beautiful black sand beach. Recreational activities in the region include swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, fishing and whale watching (January through March.)

Kapaau Weather & Climate

The North Kohala Coast on the northern tip of The Big Island has a climate similar to the wet windward (or eastern) side of the island. This means rain and wind storms are more frequent during Hawaii's winter months, November through April (although they generally clear up within 24 hours.) Unlike temperature, Hawaii's rainfall varies tremendously according to location and altitude. The most rain usually occurs at moderate elevations on the east sides of the islands due to moisture-laden ocean tradewinds. Thunderstorms are also possible on the Kohala Coast in the summertime. Even the warmest summer days are kept comfortable with the blowing trade winds. The average air temperature ranges from 74 to 88 degrees with moderate humidity of around 53 percent during the day.
