Honokaa
is a scenic, rural plantation town located on the north coast of The Big Island of Hawaii. This small community dates back to the sugar plantation days of more than 100 years ago, and has art galleries and shops, historic points of interest, a really great bakery, a health center and several beautiful bed and breakfasts. Honokaa also has a great location, sitting about halfway between the cities of Hilo and Kona. This puts you just an easy day trip from all the best Big Island attractions. But, the major attraction to the town of Honokaa is Waipio Valley, which is about a 15-minute drive from town along Highway 24. At the end of the highway, visitors can stop at a lookout that gives dramatic views of the valley and ocean, and on a sunny day, the island of Maui can be seen in the distance. This is a great area for hikers, bikers, ocean swimmers, kayackers, and fishermen, or it's a nice spot for a lazy day picnic! It has often been described as "a tropical Grand Canyon," and there are horseback, mule wagon and trekking tours available in the valley. Another attraction in town is the Honokaa Peoples Theater which is home to the annual Hamakua Music Festival that hosts many world class entertainers. You'll be charmed by the unspoiled people and places of Old Town Honokaa.

Honokaa Weather & Climate

The north side of The Big Island, like all of Hawaii, has two seasons, winter and summer. The main differences are the amount of rain and to a lesser degree, the temperatures. Temperatures depend on elevation, and in summer, it is cooler at elevations over 2000-ft. The temperature drops three degrees for every 1000-ft of elevation. It also rains more in the mountains and upcountry areas, especially on the windward (east) side. Consistent trade winds keep summer temperatures tolerable. "Konas" can blow in from the south or west and bring humid, sticky, or sweltering weather and thunderstorms - but these periods of rain and humidity are short. Winter runs from mid-October through April, and during this period, rains are more frequent. Trade winds that usually blow in from the northeast are somewhat erratic and in February, may actually cease for a few weeks.
