Papaaloa
is located on the eastern "windward" side of The Big Island, along the scenic, 45-mile Hamakua Coastline. The village of Papaaloa serves as a reminder of yesteryear, when the plantation town, its surrounding camps, the mill garage and store fronts were the centers of activity. The Papaaloa General Store is known for their deliciously prepared local cuisine and makes a great place to stop for a cool drink. Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii's most beautiful waterfalls, is located along the Hamakua Coast near Papaaloa. The falls is reached by an easy one-mile paved loop through a rainforest down to an observation deck where you'll have a perfect view of the 442-foot falls and nearby 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for rainbows! Other places to visit in the Papaaloa area include the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and Laupahoehoe Beach Park. Outdoor activities abound in the area, such as hiking, biking, golf, horseback riding, swimming, surfing, snorkeling and diving. And the historic town of Hilo, with its' Old Town, farmer's markets, shopping and restaurants is just a short drive away.

The east coast of The Big Island is one of the wettest regions in Hawaii with over 130 inches of rainfall each year. Due to the amount of precipitation, tropical rainforest and steep forested mountains also make it one of the most beautiful. The area right along the coast has temperatures that vary little because the thousands of miles of ocean surrounding the island moderates both air and water temperatures. However, the higher in elevation you go, the more extreme the temperatures. This means it can be 80 degrees at the beach and only 50 at the mountain summits. Due to moisture laden oceanic tradewinds, expect rainfall almost every day on the windward east coast, although showers generally occur in the evening hours and are short, especially during the summer months. Occasionally hurricanes reach Hawaii, although they are less frequent on the islands than in the South Pacific.
