Papaikou is located on the Hamakua Coast about five miles north of the city of Hilo on The Big Island's east coast. Volcano's National Park is about thirty minutes away and Akaka Falls is only a ten-minute drive. Lots of recreational activities are in the Papaikou area, including swimming, sailing, snorkeling and diving, surfing, hiking, biking and golf. Papaikou is home to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden that lies in a valley along the coastline. It's been ranked as one of the most beautiful, most spectacular areas in all of Hawaii. Within this garden are trails that meander through tropical rainforest with several waterfalls and bubbling streams. The beautiful and rugged Pacific coast runs alongside the park. There are hundreds of rare and exotic plants and flowers in the garden, a variety of palms, heliconias, gingers and other species. This is a non-profit nature preserve and is dedicated to being a plant sanctuary and a place for study of the trees and plants of the tropical world. Papaikou is just minutes to Hilo, the second largest city in Hawaii, and the town of Wailea, which as been called the "Beverly Hills by the Sea." Other nearby attractions include Liliuokalani Park, Rainbow Falls and the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo.

Papaikou Weather & Climate

Tropical rainforest surrounds the east coast of The Big Island, which is one of the wettest regions in Hawaii with over 130 inches of rainfall each year. Backed by steep forested mountains, temperatures vary little along the coast because the thousands of miles of ocean surrounding the island moderates both the air and water temperatures. However, the higher in elevation you go, the more extreme the temperatures. On Mauna Kea, the temperature drops an average of 3.5 degrees F for every 1,000 feet of elevation above sea level. This means it can be 80 degrees at the beach and only 50 at the summit. Due to moisture laden oceanic tradewinds, expect rainfall almost every day on the east coast, although the sun usually also makes an appearance. Occasionally cyclones reach Hawaii, although they are less frequent on the islands than in the south Pacific.
