Wailua is just south of Waiokilo Falls on the northeastern coast of Kauai. With its location on the banks of the Wailua River, which is the only navigable river in Hawaii, Wailua is known for its river kayak adventures. It's great fun for the whole family, and very safe, because there is usually little or no current on the Wailua River. This river is one of the most scenic waterways in the world as it cuts through the mountains on its' way to the Pacific Ocean, passing tropical flowers, palms, ferns, wildlife and many historical sites along the way. The waterway offers six recreational sections, a place of refuge, and a heiau complex. Another lovely place to visit is the Fern Grotto that can be reached by an excursion boat from Wailua River. The Grotto is a short walk up the landing, and features a cave under a small waterfall surrounded by lush ferns. Other nearby points of interest includes Lydgate State Park, which is a lovely spot for a picnic, swimming and beachcombing. Other beautiful white sand beaches are just five minutes away from Wailua and offer swimming and snorkeling. In fact, the whole Wailua area is filled with wonderful hiking trails and water sports, and other activities, making it a perfect base for your Kauai vacation.

Wailua Weather & Climate

Kauai's climate is tropical, and it consists of many distinct microclimates, including sunny dry areas, lush river valleys, temperate foothills and high mountain rain forests. For half of the year, temperatures on Kauai range in the 70s, with winter nighttime lows in the 60s. Summers on Kauai bring daytime temperatures in the mid-80s and nighttime lows in the 70s. Even in the middle of Kauai's summer, the nearly constant gentle trade winds create a cool balmy climate instead of the oppressive heat common to other tropical destinations. The northern part of the island is the rainiest and the southwestern part is the driest, with variations in between. However, even in the rainiest regions, a typical forecast is "morning rains, followed by sunny skies the rest of the day."
