Pukoo
is located on the east end of Molokai, between Walalua and Kamalo and east of the island's principal town of Kaunakakai. There is a beach access road located right before you reach the hamlet of Pukoo, about 0.7 mile past mile marker 15 on the Kamehameha Highway 450. This short dirt road leads to a beautiful beach area that has spectacular coastal views and a nice view of little Pukoo Harbor. The island you see in the distance is Maui. Almost any type of ocean activity can be found on Molokai, including swimming, fishing, snorkeling, diving, boating, water-skiing, windsurfing and parasailing. There are no large shopping malls or the usual tourist traps near Pukoo, and shopping is mostly done at small, family run businesses. Points of interest nearby include the Kamakana Art Gallery, which houses the largest selection of Molokai art anywhere, and the R W Meyer Sugar Mill and Museum. This small mill from the 1870s has been restored and is open to the public for tours. The Kaluakoi Golf Course, Molokai's only resort golf course, is located at nearby Kaunakakai. Pukoo is definitely for those looking for a laid back, peaceful, relaxed vacation destination away from crowds.

Pukoo Weather & Climate

Kalaupapa is a peninsula on the island of Molokai, where the climate is greatly influenced by the warm Pacific Ocean and prevailing northeasterly trade winds. Temperatures vary little from place to place - basically it is warm and wonderful year round, rarely going seven or eight degrees above or below 75. In winter, which runs December through March, you are more likely to experience a rainy day. The island of Molokai receives 27 inches of rainfall per year. Spring, summer and fall days are all very similar - warm but cooled by the trade winds. Severe storms are rare on Hawaii, but drought is possible when there are no winter storms or no trade winds. However, it rarely affects an entire island at one time.
