Lahaina
is located on the northwestern side of the island of Maui near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Kohoma Stream. This historic town was once the capital of the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific's wildest port. Today, it's a milder version, but you will still find tons of activities and nightlife in Lahaina. There are quaint shops and art galleries and fine restaurants in old-west style buildings along the town's main street. Lahaina is known for its' giant Banyan Tree (known simply as "The Tree" among locals) that shades two-thirds of an acre in Courthouse Square. This tree that started out only 8 feet is now over 50 feet tall and has twelve major trunks. Every weekend, local artists gather to sell their wares underneath it. Some of the other more colorful special events in Lahaina include the annual Lahaina Halloween, which is Maui's answer to Mardi Gras. Every Friday night is Art Night in Lahaina, where more than 15 galleries sponsor a gallery walk with demonstrating artists, music and roving entertainment. You can also ride in an open-air coach on the Maui Sugar Cane Train in Lahaina. This delightful journey on a 19th century locomotive takes you on a six-mile stretch over a 415-foot wooden trestle that offers panoramic views of the other islands and the West Maui Mountains. The beautiful beaches in the area offer swimming, snorkeling, boating, surfing, kayaking, parasailing and more. You can also go deep-sea fishing, or take a romantic sunset dinner cruise.

The northwestern tip of Maui is one of the driest and most sunny spots on the island. This region receives only about 12 to 15 inches of rainfall per year, mostly in the winter months, as compared to Hana on the east side which receives 90 inches per year. The prevailing trade winds serve to keep temperatures very pleasant and comfortable, even during the warmest months. The winds are from the northeast at about 5-15 miles per hour. Humidity is moderate to high, but due to the natural ventilation of the winds, the weather is seldom oppressive. In winter, Kona winds come from the opposite direction and usually indicate that bad weather is on the way. However, severe storms are rare on Maui.
