Aiea Weather & Climate

The southwestern side of the island of Oahu is considered the sunny "leeward" side with a warm, dry year round climate. The Koolaus and Waianae Mountain Ranges shape the flow of the prevailing northeasterly tradewinds, causing local variations in wind direction and rainfall. Basically, the trade winds pick up less moisture as they move west across the central plain between the two mountain ranges, and as a result, showers on the leeward side are light, especially in the summertime. When winds become southerly on the leeward coast (referred to as "Kona Winds,") interior clouds often extend higher in vertical height than trade wind clouds. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are then possible, especially after the second day of Kona Winds. Severe weather, however, is rare on the island of Oahu.
