South Point Weather & Climate
Hawaii is in the tropics, with a climate that is mild throughout the year with moderate humidity, persistent northeasterly trade winds, very few severe storms and rainfall that varies greatly depending on location. The mountains are a major influence on the weather on The Big Island. The eastern "windward" side receives significantly more rain than the drier "leeward" side to the west and it is fairly consistent in amount throughout the year. The mountains obstruct and accelerate the flow of the warm, moist air from the ocean. As the air moves up and over the slopes and mountains, clouds form and rainfall is much greater. When the air descends over the leeward areas, it tends to be sunny and dry. These endless peaks, valleys, ridges and broad slopes are what gives Hawaii a climate that is different from the surrounding ocean, as well as a variety of differences within the islands themselves. These differences would not exist if the islands were flat and the same size.
