Kealakekua-Bay is the site where Captain James Cook first visited in 1779, and where he was later killed. This lovely Bay is located on the North Kona coast on the western side of The Big Island. Along Kealakekua Bay at the tiny village of Napoopoo you can rent a boat or kayak to take you to the spot where Captain Cook was killed, and which is now the site of a monument in his honor. Other points of interest along the Bay include Pali Kapu O Keoua, a 600 foot high sea cliff where Hawaiian chiefs were buried, and Hikiau Heiau, a stone platform that was once a temple and the site of human sacrifices. Today, historical Kealakekua Bay is home to some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Hawaii. Kealakekua State Park also offers swimming, hiking, cruises, and kayak and boat rentals. Kaawaloa Cove, inside the park, is popular with divers because of its shallow coral reef and many varieties of colorful fish. The cove is also home to a school of playful spinner porpoises! Away from the crowds, you can watch dolphins and sea turtles at play, look for humpback whales, and unusual tropical fish, amid the serenity and beauty of historical Kealakekua Bay.

Kealakekua Bay Weather & Climate

Hawaii has a subtropical climate with only two seasons - summer, between May and October, and winter, between October and April. The Big Island is the largest and youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, and its' climate varies only in amount of rainfall, not in temperatures. The South Kona Coast region near Kealakekua Bay is on the Big Island's dry west side. The most influencing factor is orographic - caused by the mountains. The dry leeward coast of The Big Island, which is protected from clouds by the 13,600-foot summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, receives less than 30 inches of rain per year - in comparison to the east windward coast which receives an average of 130 inches. During summer, it is not uncommon for daytime skies to remain clear blue for weeks on end.
